John Gustavsson Sangsta, our lead mobile developer, is currently leading a major refactoring project of the CrewAlert app. We spoke with him about how AI is transforming the way software is built - and how quickly the change is happening.

How has AI changed the way you work on CrewAlert?
“Honestly, much more dramatically than I expected,”says John. “In just a few weeks, we’ve managed to move large parts of the codebase from Objective-C to Swift - work that realistically could easily have taken a year using traditional methods.”
According to John, the impact goes far beyond speed alone.
“The code has actually become much better. It’s cleaner, more structured, and much easier to maintain. At the same time, the overall codebase has shrunk by a factor of five, which is pretty incredible. We’ve also managed to solve issues we never fully cracked in the old architecture - like reliable iCloud sync between iPhone, iPad, and Mac.”

What does this make you think about the future of software development?
“It’s almost scary,” John says with a laugh. “Not because AI replaces developers overnight, but because the pace of change is so fast. A lot of the repetitive work that used to consume huge amounts of time can now be accelerated dramatically.”
He believes developers will increasingly focus on architecture, problem-solving, and validating results rather than manually writing code.
“You still need experience and technical understanding. AI can generate a lot, but you need to know what good looks like.”
For John, the CrewAlert project has become a real-world example of how rapidly the profession is evolving.
“This isn’t something that might happen in five years,” he says. “It’s happening right now.”
