In aviation, fatigue is often managed reactively—after long duties, disrupted sleep, or challenging rosters. But what if one of the most effective strategies is actually proactive?


Recent research published in Sleep points to the value of sleep banking—the practice of extending sleep in the days leading up to a demanding duty period. The findings are clear: individuals who increase their sleep in advance show better alertness, improved performance, and reduced fatigue, even when sleep is later restricted.


For pilots, this has real operational relevance. Early starts, night duties, and time zone changes often mean that sleep opportunities during a roster are limited. Starting such duties already fatigued creates a cumulative disadvantage. Sleep banking helps counter this by building a reserve of rest, improving resilience when it matters most.


Importantly, this is not about sleeping excessively, but about prioritizing and protecting sleep before known high-demand periods—for example, adding an extra hour or two of sleep in the days before an early report or a sequence of long duties.


From a fatigue risk management perspective, sleep banking is a simple yet powerful tool. It is:

  • Proactive, reducing fatigue risk before it develops

  • Practical, requiring no operational changes

  • Scientifically supported, with measurable performance benefits


Of course, it is not a substitute for well-designed rosters or adequate rest opportunities. But as part of a broader fatigue management strategy, it offers pilots a way to take personal control of their alertness and performance.
