A Different Kind of Nightshift

Released in 1985, The Commodores’ Nightshift was not written about roster patterns or circadian disruption. The song is a warm tribute to soul legends Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, who both died in 1984. It imagines their music continuing on a celestial “nightshift” - a poignant idea wrapped in an irresistibly smooth groove.

For aviation crew, however, the title has an obvious second meaning. Night duties are a familiar part of the job, but working while the body is programmed to sleep can challenge alertness, performance and wellbeing. That makes thoughtful rostering, good sleep planning and fatigue reporting especially important.
